My natural inclination especially when I was younger was being a true night owl. I loved staying up late, sleeping in and pretty much skipping out on early morning hours. I am pretty sure I was the last person to wake up in my dorm during my college days, just making the cutoff for lunch in the cafeteria. Now I can’t imagine spending my days like that or that I ever lived that way. Through the years, I morphed into a complete (crazy) early bird and I absolutely love it!
First up, I love waking up when it is still dark and peaceful out. It is so meditative and soothing. I ease into the day instead of frantically rushing or feeling grumpy. I allow my mind and body the time to absorb the start of a brand new day (always, always a gift). I still get excited to smell the coffee brewing too!
I am able to and guaranteed that all my self-care will happen, no matter what else happens the rest of the day. This includes in no particular order: my daily meditation practice, exercise, a proper shower, and a healthy breakfast that jump starts my metabolism.
I get so much done before most people are waking up like laundry, cleaning and running errands. A total bonus is stores are typically so much quieter in the morning so I can peruse them in peace and make more mindful decisions without dealing with crowds.
Nothing beats an early morning walk in nature—talk about soul-fulfilling! Trees, flowers, birds all seem vivid and gleaming. I feel privileged to watch their flow and rhythm—almost like I am being let in on a secret. It also settles my mind but gives me clarity when I am struggling with life issues.
Consider waking up a little bit earlier than usual to set an intention for what kind of day you want for yourself. That extra precious time will set a tone that will keep you on the right track.
